  • Plan and Monitor
    • Skim – preview titles and photos
    • Predict -what is it about
    • Question - ask yourself "Why?", "Who?" and "What is next?"
    • Preview and set a purpose
      • look for clue or hints about the text - preview the text

  • Set your Purpose
    • for NON-Fiction, write down your questions and look for the answers
    • for Fiction, keep your questions in mind, make predictions and confirm or change predictions

  • Clarifying Ideas
    • Note confusion - stop reading when something is unclear or confusing
    • Read on - the next part of the text may help you understand
    • Reread - read it again
    • Identify the main idea
    • Break up sentences - look at the parts of the sentences to see how they connect
    • Slow down - just read it slower and more carefully
    • Relate - connect the text to your own experiences
    • For NON-fiction, make a 5W's chart: ask who? what? when? where? why?
    • For NON-fiction, take notes answering your 5W's.


  • Clarifying Vocabulary
    • Reread - read it again
    • Look for familiar word parts such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
    • Use what you already know to make connections.
    • Context clues - look for other words that may mean the same thing, or a definition of the word. Look especially at the root words.
    • Analyze clues - check out what is said, look for a definition
    • Check for relationships - look for connections between sentences
    • Check out your meaning - substitute or replace the word with one you know in its place to see if it make sense
    • Look for examples of the word.
